Find a comfortable seat with your sitting bones rooting down and your legs bound to the earth below you. The crown of your head reaches up towards the sky. Even though you’re sitting tall, your spine is soft. Relax your hands with your palms facing down on your knees to stimulate apana, the downward flow of energy. Let your eyes softly flutter closed.

As you tune into your inner landscape, feel the rest of the world slipping further away. In Sanskrit, we call this Pratyahara. Begin to watch your inhales and exhales as they come and go. Your breath anchors you in this moment. Breathing in. Breathing out. Each breath becomes fuller and deeper, naturally guiding you towards that calm, still space within. Use your exhales, especially, to let go of all your worries and feel any stress melting away.

Now come to your centring thought for today: “Sky above me, earth below me, calm within me”. Your breath flows as you repeat this mantra, silently in your mind. “Sky above me, earth below me, calm within me”. If your mind wanders, just let it be and then gently guide it back to rest on your breath and your mantra. Breathing in. Breathing out. “Sky above me, earth below me, calm within me”. Continue for a few more moments on your own.

Now slowly start to deepen your breath and release the mantra. Come back to your body and in your own time, open your eyes to the room.

Remember that you can return to this comforting, still space as often as you like. All you have to do is close your eyes and connect with your breath to cultivate calmness within. This practice is always here to support you in times of stress and calm is only a breath away.
