Whenever you open up your spiritual energy, whether it’s through meditation, being highly sensitive or your work in the world, it’s so important to protect yourself. Your energy is precious and if you don’t tend to that subtle part of you, you’ll quickly become depleted.
All day long, we have energetic cords plugging into our bodies and leading away from them, plugging into something else. In some places, you’re giving your energy away, and in others, people are hooked in to you, siphoning your energy. Without protection, you’re constantly leaking and diffusing energy into the world.
That’s how your soul ends up struggling with the weight of something that wasn’t yours to carry. People can unknowingly steal your energy or leave an energetic imprint on you. You find yourself desperately trying to shake it off and call all of the missing pieces of you home.
I learnt this lesson the hard way as a yoga teacher because no one really taught me how to protect my energy. I used to walk around wide open, energetically porous and soaking up other people’s stuff like a sponge! I felt drained on a daily basis, was in constant judgment of others and always felt anxious and overwhelmed. Now I know how to nurture my sensitivity, I can keep myself safe and life feels so much lighter.
If you’re a healer, creative or coach, an empath or perhaps just a highly sensitive person, your energy must be treasured - so you can hear your intuitive voice and show up fully as you share your soul gifts with the world.
We often make the mistake of thinking that we have to do it all alone. But you don’t have to rely on your own strength. Honouring your energy is a devotional practice and when you call on divine Source energy, you can stop feeling drained and allow yourself to be lifted.
It’s a lot easier to shield your energy than it is to retrieve it, but here are 5 super simple tips that will help you protect yourself and clear your auric field:
1. Close Your Cloak or Zip Up
Wrap your arms around yourself as though you were putting on a thick, heavy cloak (or giving yourself a hug!) This will protect you and keep you safe as it sends a message to the Universe that your field is shut down. In the same way, you can zip yourself up. Image a zipper from your root to your throat chakra. Literally zip it up to seal in your energy. This covers your most tender, sensitive and emotional areas so your energy field isn’t left wide open.
2. Pray for Protection
The simplest way to protect your energy is to pray, or set an intention to close down your energy field. Before every yoga class I teach, I say: Thank you Universe for protecting my energy so I can be a clear channel for the light. After every class, before I head out of the studio, I ask that any positive energy I’ve lost be restored and any negative energy I’ve picked up be removed. You can say any prayer that makes sense to you. By praying, to the Universe, Spirit, your Inner Guide or Higher Self, you’re effectively setting an intention to shut down your energy exchange and protect your auric field.
3. Cut the Cords
This meditation practice will help you release any invisible energetic attachments with anyone that’s lowering your vibration. Often, these connections hook into our energy field and can negatively affect us. You’ll cut the cord with anyone you feel energetically entangled with.
Close your eyes and get comfortable. Take a deep breath in and exactly completely. Notice anywhere in your body that you’re feeling anxiety or discomfort and gently breathe into it. Now imagine someone who lowers your energy. What feelings are coming up for you? Breathe into wherever they live in your body, experiencing them fully and then exhale, releasing them.
See this person in your mind’s eye and as you look at them, visualise a cord attached to whatever part of your body is experiencing low energy, emotional pain or discomfort. It may even be hooked into a particular chakra. Notice what the cord seems to be made of. It could be a rope, a ribbon or even a strong cable. See the other end plugging in to the other person’s body. Be honest about what the cord is doing and how it’s making you feel.
Now imagine yourself with a pair of scissors, a sword or some other tool in your hand. Take a deep breath in as you cut the cord. Exhale as it falls to the floor and watch it melt away. As the cord dissolves, so does the energetic attachment. Take a deep breath in and breathe a sigh of relief that you have been released. Silently forgive the other person to set yourself free. Take another deep breath in and exhale completely. Then, when you’re ready, open your eyes to the room.
4. Take a Salt Bath
Salt baths are such a powerful way to clear your energy field. I have one several times a week! The high dose of magnesium softens tension in your body, soothes your adrenals and helps you slow down. If you’re feeling energetically vulnerable, this will clear away any negative energy around you. Fill up your tub with a cup of Epsom Salts, a few drops of essential oil and soak for 20 minutes or more. If you don’t have a bath, you can always use a salt scrub in the shower in a similar way. Massage it into your skin and as you wash it off, imagine any negative energy swirling away down the drain.
5. Let Nature Nourish You
Being out in nature fills me up like nothing else. Go barefoot on the grass and plug down through your feet, allowing the energy of the Earth to recharge you. You can also lie down and feel the back of your heart beating with the pulsation of the planet. If you’re highly sensitive, this is a great way to get grounded and infuse yourself with the positive, healing energy of nature.
